The [Monarch] Butterfly Effect

The [Monarch] Butterfly Effect was created in partnership between Natural Partners and The Monarch Sister Schools Program, Tecnológico de Monterrey, and American University’s Center for Environmental Filmmaking.

This film serves as an educational piece about the Monarch Butterfly, its multi-generational migration from Canada to Mexico each year, and the initiatives being undertaken to protect the species through the Monarch Sister Schools program.

On this project, I worked as a videographer on site in Mexico, co-interviewer (with assist on Spanish translation), and editor. I edited the promo and worked on PR leading up to the premiere of the film. In particular, I am proud of being the creative lead behind the “butterfly ladies” segment of the film that follows the work of the women working at the El Rosario Butterfly Preserve responsible for safely carrying the Monarchs away from tourists when they fall from the great oyamel fir trees where they take shelter during the winter months.

This film was a beautiful collaboration between many talented young filmmakers and environmentalists and played a foundational role in inspiring my desire to make what AU’s School of Communication would deem “Media that Matters”.
